Since 2011, the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents have had a comfortable way to visit family for long stays: the Parent and Grandparent Super Visa. It's a multiple-entry visa that can be valid for up to ten years, and each visit can now last up to five years at a time.
Insurance is a requirement
Proof of private medical insurance must be submitted with the application. The policy must:
- be from a Canadian insurance company (or an IRCC-approved foreign insurer);
- provide at least $100,000 of emergency coverage for health care, hospitalization and repatriation; and
- be valid for at least one year from the date of entry.
How to find the lowest price
- Compare insurers side by side. Premiums for the same coverage can differ by hundreds of dollars.
- Consider a deductible. Choosing a deductible can lower the premium significantly.
- Look at monthly payment plans. Many insurers now let you spread the cost over the year.
- Be accurate on medical questions. A cheaper plan is no bargain if a claim is denied.
